Ms. Spanier received her B.A. from Cornell University, College of Arts and Sciences, in 1975, and her J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1978. She is admitted to the Bar of the State of New York, the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the Second, Ninth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeals. She is a member of the Securities Litigation Committee of the New York City Bar Association.
Ms. Spanier has concentrated in the litigation of complex class and shareholder derivative cases in federal and state courts throughout the country, including serving as one of lead counsel in In re Adelphia Comm. Corp. Sec. & Deriv. Litig., 03 MD 1529 (LMM), pending in the Southern District of New York. In addition, Ms. Spanier served as one of lead trial counsel in Braun and Hummel v. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Case No. 3127 and 3757 (Pa. C.P. Philadelphia Co.), an employee class action on behalf of Wal-Mart's current and former employees in the state of Pennsylvania tried to a $78 million plaintiffs' verdict in September and October 2006. For the work that she and her co-counsel did in that case, they were named finalists by the Public Justice Foundation for the Public Justice 2007 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award, bestowed annually to the lawyers who make the greatest contribution to the public interest by trying or settling precedent setting cases. In 2007, Ms. Spanier successfully argued an appeal before the New Jersey Supreme Court in Iliadis v. Wal-Mart Stores, resulting in the reversal of the trial court’s denial of class certification and the certification of a class of 100,000 Wal-Mart employees in New Jersey.
